Smoothies can be a quick and satisfying source of nutrients for people on the go. A healthy smoothie is one that is nutrient-dense and includes some dietary fat, which is important for biological functions. We found this great Strawberry Chia Smoothie recipe at Fit Foodie Finds.
Chia seeds are a rich source of anti-oxidants, protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. They are chock full of health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes. It’s best to grind them or soak them prior to using in order to release the enzyme inhibitors, allowing the omega-3’s and other nutrients to be easily digested and assimilated.
Kefir or Greek yogurt is a good source of probiotics and live cultures which aid in gastrointestinal health.
Although this recipe uses frozen fruit, feel free to substitute fresh fruit instead, and just add some ice for a thicker smoothie.
½ cup strawberries, frozen
½ cup sliced bananas, frozen
½ cup kefir or Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon chia seeds
½ cup almond milk, unsweetened
splash of vanilla extract
Place all ingredients in a blender or Magic Bullet and blend until smooth! If you didn’t grind or soak the chia seeds, allow to sit for a few minutes so they can soften and expand. Enjoy!
